Bengaluru, 6 Oct

The NSUI Karnataka on Tuesday staged a protest here demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar amid allegations of irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.

The protest was held at Freedom Park here was joined by NSUI National President Vinod Jakhar, and AICC National Secretary Gopinath Palaniyappan along with others.

The National Students' Union of India (NSUI), affiliated to the Congress, raised concerns over the functioning of the Election Commission and issues surrounding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Speaking to PTI videos, NSUI National President Jakhar said that the voices have now been raised from every corner of the country that Gyanesh Kumar was working against the country and should resign.

Calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah "thieves", he alleged that they have formed the government by stealing votes.

"They will have to apologise for this. Even if you put NSUI workers in jail, we are not going to stop. We will get Gyanesh Kumar to resign. We are not going to stop. Our struggle will continue," he said, as he was being taken in a van by the police along with other protesters.

"Even if you put NSUI workers in jail, we are not going to stop. We will get Gyanesh Kumar to resign. Our struggle will continue," he said.

AICC National Secretary Gopinath Palaniyappan said the Congress would continue its agitation until Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar was removed from his position and action was taken against him.

He said the issue concerned the entire youth and student community and alleged that efforts were being made to "cut their votes".

"Today, our leader Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition, along with all the Members of Parliament and all the general secretaries, are fighting for this cause on the streets of Delhi... We will not stop until Gyanesh Kumar is removed from his position and action is taken against him," he told reporters here.

He alleged that the exercise to delete names from electoral rolls was being carried out in collusion with the BJP and accused the authorities of "stealing votes".

"Names of living voters could not be removed from electoral rolls merely on the grounds that they had shifted residence or that their names appeared as duplicate entries, and insisted that due process, including issuing notices, had to be followed," Palaniyappan told reporters here.

He also referred to the Supreme Court, which on Monday said that it has not approved any modifications to Form 6 being used by the Election Commission (EC) during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in various states.

Form 6 is an application through which an eligible person seeks inclusion in the electoral roll.

"This Form 6 is a very wrong subject. They are saying that this was done after taking consensus, but the consensus of all the Chief Election Commissioners was not taken. They are also saying that the Supreme Court gave clearance. The Supreme Court has said that it did not give any such clearance," he said.

Palaniyappan said thousands of students were coming together and protests were beginning across the country. He said students should unite and continue the agitation until those responsible were removed.

The NSUI said it stands firmly for free, fair and transparent elections and demanded accountability in the electoral process.

The protesters demanded that the EC, as a constitutional institution responsible for conducting elections, uphold the principles of transparency, fairness and accountability, and protect every eligible citizen's right to vote.

The agitation coincided with the opposition INDIA bloc's protest march in Delhi to the EC office on the issue.
